One of the most important things to keep in mind when using oils is that every individual has different needs and sensitivities! Starting with diluted oils and a light touch is wise when you are gaining experience in aromatherapy!

oils

We use essential oils everyday. They are in our toothpaste, our laundry detergent, perfume, candles, candy, deodorant, and shampoos. Anything that has been scented has essential oils in them. Food and perfume grade oils are typically synthetic unless stated otherwise. These two types of oils cannot be used therapeutically for health benefits. Any suggestions made in this class and website are specific to Young Living Essential Oils and should not be used with oils from another source.

Young Living’s plants are steam distilled and contain the hormones, immunity, scents and essence of each one. Distillation is a highly highly temperamental process. Plants are steamed over a long period of time and low heat and if any step is missed or if any step is performed at the wrong time, the entire crop can go to waste. Gary Young said it took him 5 years to train the men who work the distilleries.

seedtoseal

Young Living has developed their “Seed to Seal” promise to ensure that they have inspected the purity of the oil from the planting of the seed to the sealing of the bottle. When Young Living buys land for a new farm they even check the history of that land to ensure there has never been any pesticides or herbicides used on it that could leak into the crop. You can visit the Young Living farms anytime. You are paying farmers to go pull your weeds. You are paying for people to go harvest your plants you want and see their methods of growth and testing. That’s how open they are about their purity. Young Living has rigorous testing and standards for their oils. You can see YL’s seed to seal promise on their website. “Seed to Seal” is not a slogan, it’s who Young Living is! I personally wouldn't trust anyone else when it comes to my family!

Can’t I buy cheaper essential oils at grocery stores and health stores?

Essential oils are not regulated. Companies can put any filler or additive into what they call an “essential oil”. Here is just an example on essential oils and FDA regulations regarding labeling. An essential oil bottle only has to contain 5% pure essential oil to be labeled 100% pure. The justification for this is that the 5% within the bottle IS 100% essential oil. Like, the difference between buying a bag of chocolate chips that says "contains 100% chocolate chips" and buying a bag of chocolate chip cookie mix that says "contains 100% chocolate chips."

Read about FDA labeling >

Most of what you will find at the grocery store is either another ingredient altogether or has toxic fillers in it. You can have reactions to these types of oils and they can cause a whole other set of wellness challenges.

No fillers are ever added to Young Living’s oils and no toxins are present!!

What about ordering Young Living through Amazon or Ebay?

This is against YL policy and if they are caught their account will be terminated. Some people have diluted oils and resold them or replaced them so it can potentially be dangerous that way. YL cannot guarantee anything off amazon. I would never recommend buying oils this way!! Plus, you miss out on earning Essential Reward points, Promos, getting your oils paid for… all the benefits of your Young Living membership!!

littles

dilute

Here are some great dilution ratios to keep in mind when using oils around our littles!

So how exactly do you “dilute” oils? Diluting is “watering down” the potency of essential oils which is key for sensitive skin. These are the suggested dilution ratios by age.

Let’s talk about what you can use to dilute those oils! These are our top two carrier oils for dilution.

Coconut Oil:
If you can use coconut oil without breakouts or dashing that may occur in some people (it has a tendency to clog pores) then feel free to use some as your carrier oil!

Young Living’s V6:
This blend is super handy because it is thick, has a great shelf life, and comes with a pump. V6 contains coconut, sesame, grape, sweet almond, wheat germ, sunflower and olive oils.

faq

These are all questions I've asked at some point and there are never any wrong questions. What are some questions you've had about using oils?

I wanted to point you to some answers to questions that are frequently asked!!

Q: Can I drink oils in my water?
A: Yes, just make sure you use a stainless steel or glass container!

Q: What does "neat" mean?
A: Applying an oil neat means without a carrier oil, straight on the skin. We often apply our oils neat on the bottoms of the feet where the skin is thick and not especially sensitive.

Q: How do I store my oils?
A: Store them in a cool, dark place --aka not the car in summer heat

Q: Can I put oils in a candle warmer or humidifier?
A: Some oils will lose their therapeutic properties when heated. For retaining all the benefits, stick with only using oils in a essential oil diffuser. Also, avoid putting oils into plastic that is not specifically intended for essential oils.

Q: Will my oils expire?
A: Pure oils that have been stored properly will last indefinitely, as viable essential oils were found in king tut's tomb! Oil blends that contain a carrier oil such as almond or coconut oil may potentially expire - so keep them stored in a cool, dark place!

Q: Why do some bottles have childproof caps?
A: A childproof camp is require on bottles that contain Wintergreen essential oil because a compound - methyl salicylate - is the dominate ingredient in Wintergreen. In products containing the SYNTHETIC version of methyl salicylate (such as bengay) the compound is not easily metabolized by the body -- potentially toxic. However, the natural version in Wintergreen essential oil DOES NOT ACCUMULATE IN THE BODY, and is not toxic like its synthetic counterpart! Although, regulation still requires the childproof cap. We love how our natural oils work so well with the body and there isn't a need for concern about accumulation!

applying oils

If you are using oil because of a pain, bruise, skin blemish, or discomfort it will be most effective to rub the essential oil directly on location. To get the full benefits of the oils, give them about 20 minutes before they reach all cells in your body.

The bottom of your feet has a lot of nerve endings and the pores are bigger on your feet! It’s smart to put socks on after you apply oils to your feet. Essential oils can easily pass through membranes so applying oils topically is highly effective! If you are wanting to layer oils- give your skin about 20-30 minutes between applying a new oil.

What happens if you get an essential oil in your eye? Simply put a fatty and gentle oil (like coconut oil!) in your eye and then use a paper towel or wash cloth to remove the oils from your eye. The coconut oil collects the essential oil and makes it easy to remove!

Continue putting coconut oil in your eye and removing with a wash cloth until you feel comfortable again.

Don’t try flushing the eye with water because that will separate the oil more and cause more irritation, remember water and oil don’t mix!

lavender

Is lavender safe during pregnancy and with boys? If you think about how when we cook, our foods and plants change form when they are heated. Certain plants that were not acidic, will become acidic. Heat changes their chemical makeup. This is why a slow and long distillation process is SO important. BIGGEST DETERMINING FACTOR IN SAFETY IS ALWAYS QUALITY. I have so much peace of mind knowing that Young Living will throw out a batch if the essential oil is not exactly how it should be. Their #1 priority is always the quality of their oils.

LAVENDER + PREGNANCY

Lavandin (a cheaper form of lavender often sold in stores) is very different than Young Living’s lavender! Lavandin has been mentioned in aromatherapy guides as an oil to avoid during pregnancy.

We have so many moms who have incredible testimonies in using Young Living's lavender while pregnant with incredible benefits.

LAVENDER + BOYS

"Since 2007 there have been many warnings about lavender and tea tree oils that relate back to this study. Others, including myself, have suggested that such cautions are unnecessary and premature. The new research, in which considerable quantities of lavender oil were used, found that there was no increase in uterine weight, and so no estrogenic action."

Hope this helps and gives you a better understanding on lavender, the different qualities, and research out there!!

adaptogenic

Can you use an oil wrong?

No- not really. Unless you are NOT using them consistently! Yes certain oils should be diluted. The main thing is to get them out and USE them and use a little bit often! Similar to how we eat three-five times a day to nourish our bodies... not once a week!!

Essential oils are adaptogenic, which means that they can change and adapt to be what your body needs. They were created for us!!!

Each plant has a frequency and it will come along side to support emotions and organs. Our oils provide the support our bodies need.

Let me give you an example: I might open a bottle of lemongrass and get a calming and relaxed feeling. When you open lemongrass you might feel energized. The essential oil will adapt to what each of our bodies are needing. Once the oil reaches an organ that needs support, it will stop and work the most in that area. Which is incredible because you might have different areas that need support next week and your oils will still be there to help you!
